Haiti is located in the Caribbean, situated on one-third of the Island, Hispaniola. In 2010, Haiti was hit by a magnitude seven earthquake and the devastation is still in repair today. With over 10 million residents in Haiti, it's reported that half of the population are under age 20. Due to economic hardship many families are forced to place their children in orphanages. According to Wikipedia, “The World Fact Book reports a shortage of skilled labor, widespread unemployment and underemployment, more than two-thirds of the labor force do not have formal jobs.” Many organizations are working to change this by empowering the people of Haiti to earn a living in a dignified way. These organizations are equipping the people with trades using locally available resources and paying fairly for production of the goods. The array of crafted items includes; jewelry made from local clay beads, goods made with Batik fabric, specialty leather goods, repurposed products, and much more. In Haiti we’ve been privileged to partner with these organizations: 2nd Story Goods out of Gonaives, REBUILD Globally and Haiti Design Co-op out of Port au Prince.
